Burn Your Feed Reader: How to Make Sure Your Feed Reader Is Always At Reader Zero

(Update)

Barren Vending, Powerfully Clean

Barren Vending, Powerfully Clean by Adam.

I’m familiar with two separate feed readers. You’ll have to adapt these instructions for your feed reader.

Permanent Reader Zero for NetNewsWire on OS X

To perminently achieve reader zero for NetNewsWire on OS X

  • Open the applications folder.
  • Drag NetNewsWire to the trash.
  • Empty the trash.

That was an afterthought, though. My main feed reader was Google Reader. Getting Google Reade to perminant Reader Zero was a more complicated procedure.

Permanent Reader Zero for Google Reader

First, delete all your subscriptions.

  • Go to Settings link in the top left corner.
  • Click on the Subscriptions tab.
  • Select All N Subscriptions where N is the depressing number messages devoid of context that are ready to either consume your precious time and attention or else suck away at your sense of accomplishment.
  • Click the Unsubscribe button.

This is not enough. If you are like me you have been creating a mound of items that you swear you’ll read some day using tags and stars.

Burn it.

FeedBurner Does What FeedBlitz Does

Looking at Ed Trelinski’s blog I see that FeedBurner is now offering email subscriptions. I’m going to stick with FeedBlitz for the email of my feeds for the time being.

Here Comes Another Bubble / Brian Oberkirch

Encountered a YouTube video that amused me. Here Comes Another Bubble by the The Richter Scales sung to the tune of We Didn’t Start the Fire. It amused me. I sent a link to Dave Coustan via Jabber and said “This amused me.” In a bit he comes back with “I spotted Brian Oberkrich in that video.” Shortly thereafter the above screen capture was on Flickr. Below, you can watch the video from which it was taken.

A Third Space In Ann Arbor

The Detroit newsletter slash website Metromode reports that SRT opens Ann Arbor office, more than triples its employees. Although, it looks as though it was a reprinted press release, the notion of third spaces is one that I’m pursuing with coworking meetups at our lovely New Orleans coffee houses.

del.icio.us for Keeping In Touch

Got a trackback from Matt Hampel on a post about the New Orleans Wiki. He is one of the keepers of the ArborWiki. It was from an automatic posting of his del.icoi.us bookmarks. It struck me as an easy way to reach out to new people. An easy way to reward people for getting my attention. As if my attention was not reward enough already.

Widows Twitter Clients

TeleTwitter and Twitteroo come recommended by RevMark. Sally Tamarkin’s friend recommends Tweetr. Laura Fisher recommends TwitBox. A list of Twitter clients is available at the Apps page of the Twitter Fan Wiki. Update: For Mac I recommend Twitterific which blends in with my desktop beautifully and takes advantage of Growl if it is installed.

doodle.ch

From a suggestion by Merlin Mann in Reviving a moribund project with Doodle, I’m using doodle.ch to schedule conference calls. It strikes me as a good tool for scheduling even one on one meetings. It is presents a nice grid from which a people can select a time to meet. Much easier than emailing back and forth.
