Business Cards
February 27th, 2006Here are the proofs for two new business cards. I’d love to get some feedback. They are important tools of the trade here in New Orleans.
The first card is for my web design business. There is a change that I’m already going to request, that rather than “Software Developer”, my title is “Software Designer”, otherwise, do you think I should add a terse list of services or not?
For the Think New Orleans business card, I think I’ll post an entry on the Think New Orleans blog. I’d love to get your feedback on which of the two cards you think is best.
What do you think of the title “Software Designer”?

I was going to say to go without the service listing, an the grounds that it may be restrictive. But the card with the list looks a lot better! “Software Designer” sounds good, as long as it is what you do …
List the services, as long as it doesn’t exceed 3 or 4. People need to know what you can do for them.
Bill
Hmm… Well, I didn’t want to be specific about the services, since I’d like to move into things like IP telephony and enterprise software. However, I see that web design is a great way to kick start. I’m concerned about getting people to think of me as a web guy, but not think of me for bigger things.

The title “Software Designer” is fuzzy on purpose. It’s not a real title that you know of is it?
“since I’d like to move into things” - that’s why my original thought was not to have them, so as not to constrain the possibilities …
and I’m sure that somewhere in the world exists somebody with the job title “Software Designer”! If you do that work, then it’s a valid title - and it doesn’t confine you to any particular type of woftware, either.
With List of Services
Otherwise, the title alone is forgetful and when you talk to each customer, you don’t want to have to write with a pen on your business card what exactly it is you do.
I like the color scheme.
Maitri and Bill,
I’m going with the services listed. I’ve been handing out the proofs and people like them very much. It’s odd, but they look a lot better in print.
A print designer has a magical ability to make that traslation between the screen and the printer.
You’re right. It’s much easier to leave them with something. All I’m doing now is handing out the card and saying, look at my new business cards. I don’t have to say, I’m doing web sites, if they have any interest, they can ask.
Ric
Think that if I want to redefine what I do, like follow through with my plan for Asterisk and IP telephony, I’ll create a new business card, maybe a new identity.
I’m concerned that people will think of me as a web guy, and not think that I know about enterprise systems, but I’m finding that people here really lump computers up more than I imagined.
How about with services but saying something like: ‘Web applications and design for 21st century’ - enigmatic but not easily forgotten.
