Reverting Wiki Spam Considered Harmful
September 3rd, 2007For the person who reverts. It has become my first action of the day, but afterwards the direction of the day is lost. It muddles the clear thoughts of the early morning. This is probably why I have deep seated distaste for the New Orleans Wiki. These sentences right here. Barely able to punch them out. It sets the day on a trajectory is fussing with things. Sorting email. Sorting files. It is productivity poison.

I still think it makes sense to require users to register for the wiki. The benefits of having it wide open are not justified by the spam headaches.
Registration only means that the robots register before spamming.
But surely it can be implemented in such a way as to filter out bots? MediaWiki being so widely implemented I’d think there’s be some sort of solution.

I’ve installed “ConfrimEdit”:http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ConfirmEdit_extension and spam has dropped off. Only two UCE edits in five days.
Also, I’ve installed a new theme, the ArborWiki theme. It looks much nicer. It is better for entries that are not really encyclopedic.
[...] Got a trackback from Matt Hampel on a post about the New Orleans Wiki. He is one of the keepers of the ArborWiki. It was from an automatic posting of his del.icoi.us bookmarks. It struck me as an easy way to reach out to new people. An easy way to reward people for getting my attention. As if my attention was not reward enough already.
